These creators are renowned for their incredibly inventive and surreal works that address concepts like identity, spirituality, and societal critique. Magical Realism became a strategy, both in literature and in the plastic arts that conflated a dreamworld with a waking one, abstraction with representationalism, that which is certain with the unknown. There are classics like One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garca Mrquez (who is credited for popularizing the genre with this very title), Beloved by Toni Morrison, and The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, among others. Among the best-known practitioners of magic realism are Frida Kahlo, Remedios Varo, and Leonora Carrington. Magical realism differs from pure fantasy primarily because it is set in a normal.
